The Myth of Meditation

The Myth of Meditation: It’s Not All Humming and Lotus Poses

When you hear the word meditation, what’s the first image that comes to mind?

Probably someone sitting cross-legged on a mountaintop, eyes closed, fingers in a strange position, chanting “ommmmm” to the sound of wind chimes. And while that might work beautifully for some, it’s time we laid that stereotype to rest. Meditation is no longer the exclusive domain of yogis in Himalayan caves – it’s for all of us, here and now, in whatever way suits our modern lives.

Meditation Isn’t a One-Size-Fits-All Practice

For many, the idea of meditating feels intimidating or even a bit silly. “I can’t sit still for that long,” “I get bored,” or “I don’t know how to clear my mind” are common responses. And here’s the good news: you don’t have to clear your mind, you don’t have to hum, and you certainly don’t have to twist yourself into a pretzel on the floor.

Meditation is simply the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment – gently and without judgment. And there are so many ways to do that, far beyond the traditional format.

Soothing Sounds and Soft Melodies

One of the easiest ways to enter a meditative state is through music. Think gentle piano, ambient tones, nature sounds, or even lo-fi chill beats. Closing your eyes and letting the sound wash over you can be just as effective as silent sitting. It's about letting go, slowing down, and giving your mind permission to stop racing.

Create a playlist of calming tunes, lie down, and breathe deeply. No expectations, no pressure. Just be. That, right there, is meditation.

Walking Meditation – Movement Meets Mindfulness

If stillness isn't your thing, try walking meditation. This is where mindfulness meets movement. You simply walk slowly and with awareness – feel your feet on the ground, notice the air on your skin, tune into the rhythm of your breath. Even a short stroll around the block can become a powerful moment of inner calm when done intentionally.

Meditative Storytelling – Sleep’s Secret Weapon

Now here’s a gem: bedtime story meditation. It’s like someone tucking you into bed with a story – only the story is designed to lull you into deep relaxation. These guided narratives, available on platforms like YouTube or popular meditation apps, take you on dreamy journeys through forests, beside oceans, or into the stars.

The tone is slow, the voice gentle, and the content purposefully soothing. Many of these sessions are designed to switch off the analytical brain, and you may find yourself asleep before the story even really begins. If you’ve ever struggled with insomnia or a busy nighttime brain, this might just be your secret weapon.

I challenge you to try one tonight – I’ll be surprised if you last more than 5 minutes before drifting off. And you’ll likely wake up feeling clear-headed and calm.

Other Modern Meditative Techniques:

  • Breathwork: No chanting required – just focus on your breath for a few minutes. Try box breathing (inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) or deep belly breathing to regulate your nervous system.
  • Guided Meditations: Ideal for beginners. These are available for every mood – anxiety, confidence, focus, gratitude – and are often only 5 to 10 minutes long.
  • Journaling as Meditation: Pouring thoughts onto paper without judgment is deeply meditative. It clears the mental clutter and reconnects you with your inner voice.
  • Mindful Crafting or Drawing: Knitting, doodling, or even adult colouring books allow your mind to enter a relaxed, almost trance-like state. It’s less about the outcome, more about the rhythm and focus.
  • Body Scan Meditations: Lying in bed, mentally scan your body from head to toe, noticing sensations without trying to change anything. It’s a grounding, calming way to reconnect with yourself.

Final Thoughts: Make Meditation Your Own

The myth that meditation has to look or feel a certain way is exactly what keeps many of us from trying it. But the truth is, it’s personal. It’s flexible. It’s forgiving.

Modern life is hectic. Our minds rarely get a moment of peace. Meditation – in whatever form you choose – is a gift you give yourself. It's not about perfection, it's about presence. So, whether it’s through a bedtime story, a slow walk, or music that makes your soul exhale – find what works for you.

And remember you don’t need to hum to find harmony.
